Scottish minibreaking – North Berwick

Go to the beach in spring they said.  It will be beautiful they said.  Cue forty five mile per hour winds (aka gale force), hail, snow, sun, sub zero temperatures, colossal waves and sand that whips your face like a brutal dermabrasion.  But beautiful it was nonetheless…

STAY

We stayed in the cutest Airbnb which was bang in the centre yet only twenty steps from the beach.  I love a luxury hotel, you know I really do, but with our growing brood the appeal of a space to call your own for a few days and spread out is definitely strong…

DO

Well…  mostly the beach.  And the town is super sweet and quaint with some great shops and eateries, which is basically what we did.  The wonderful thing about having dogs is that when otherwise you might debate going out in the storm, with dogs there is no choice, you wrap up and you brave it.  And I am so glad because the beach was basically deserted and yet so beautiful.  And there was zero guilt about the Steampunk coffee and brownie to warm up afterwards…

EAT

We discovered this gorgeous spot, Herringbone, and snuck away for a grown up date night.  The food was pretty good and I liked the menu, varied and with nice choices like seared scallops and lentil salad with flatbread, there were cocktails with herbs (always a winner with me) and the husband would heartily recommend The Guv’nor if you like a nice glass of red.  The interior really had me swooning though; that dining table with all its mismatched chairs and stunning pottery atop…  Let’s put it this way, we went back again for lunch the next day with the troops.

I have to mention Lobster Shack because, although we did not go this time due to the weather, it is so wonderful to really immerse yourself in the seaside feels (you can see it in this ancient post when the sun was shining but it was apparently still windy, according to my hair anyway).

And, on the recommendation of a friend, we stopped at The Main Course in Gullane on the way back and it was really, really good.  Amazing food, another stunning interior and the staff were a level above.  Please go.  Even though I didn’t take any photos…  but sometimes you just gotta live the moment.

So yes it was wild but it was good and now we have a perfect excuse to go back again…  in the summer.

Oh I love that last pic! It does look so wild and windy, but still beautiful! While we don’t go swimming, we do go to the beach now and then in winter. It’s a better time to go as it’s not as how and you don’t get the high UV rays, haha! I do love it in summer though.

Hope you are having a nice start to your week! We are looking forward to the Easter long weekend here.

I bet your winter beaches are still a bit more sunny than this though!

Recently had a day trip from Glasgow to N Berwick as my pupper needed dental work at the Dental Vets there. Steampunk was a very cool building for a coffee shop and the cakes were indeed delicious! We need to go back in 6months again for a check up and I had thought about an overnighter, and your article has made my mind up for me! Gonna look into the AirBnb and some of the eateries you have mentioned/recommended! Gorgeous pics! Can’t wait to take my pupper, toddler and Hubby too for a mini break xx thanks!
