As if I need a reason to justify more baskets in my life…
But these are baskets that make a difference – yeah they look great but they also have a real tangible impact in the world. This May TK Maxx and Homesense have deliveries of baskets and coffee as part of the Sustainable Trade Project in Uganda, developed in 2011 in partnership with the Rwenzori Trading Company. The project enables parents to send their children to school by increasing their incomes; those involved are taught how to produce and sell coffee, cocoa, cotton and crafts, including beautifully handmade baskets from locally sourced materials.
The partnership has been on the go since 2011 (creating a 40% increase in children completing primary education) and, in truth, I actually bought some of these baskets last year and found them to be the perfect way to house the unsightly baby changing paraphernalia (nappy bags, creams, etc.). That being said, any excuse for more baskets right? So last weekend I popped down to my local TK Maxx store for a couple more… The hand woven pieces are based on traditional designs, with each signed by the person who made it, which I love, and the sale of two baskets is enough to cover one child’s schooling for a term. So naturally I bought two.
The platter style, just £5.99, is one I imagine is going to be used again and again because it is so darn pretty but for now I have given it a home atop the green sofa to serve as a tray. In lieu of a proper coffee table for this front room as yet (the interiors shopping list seems to be endless doesn’t it?), this offers a great little spot for all those things I want to set down, just not directly onto the squashy, velvet couch. Plus, you know how I feel about pink and green together.
Another colour combo I am a total sucker for? Blue and white. Continuing the theme of ‘stashing baby stuff’ (wow, you find you accumulate a lot of ‘stuff’), my second new basket, this one £9.99, is home to the current rotation of fluffy animals in the family room. Baskets just possess incredible capabilities for making all your clutter look better don’t you think? It’s like all the same junk is still there, it just looks better, like you meant it to be there.
