Elusive summer staples sourced

Welcome to paradise.  Otherwise known as the deepest South of France, nestled in the middle of ancient, hillside villages and forests and this villa where we spent the most glorious weekend.  This was indeed a hen weekend, just not as you know it, but more on that next time…

Let us get back to those elusive summer staples.

There are two things I struggle with every single year – shorts and the perfect flat sandals.  And somehow, right at the start of June, I managed to nail them both.  A last minute order from Next landed these high waisted, white denim shorts on my doorstep and they are perfect.  They sit right up there above my belly button and they do not gape at the back (I repeat, they do NOT gape) and, whilst they are almost indecently short for a mama they do not cling to that bit at the top of your thigh; I mean there is just enough spare fabric to save you from looking like Coachella’s leftovers.  I genuinely think they are my favourite denim shorts ever.  Huge bonus then that they are just a smidge over twenty quid.  Sprints off to order in black too…

Things I look for in the quintessential summer sandal – neutral colour that goes with errythang whilst simultaneously lengthens legs, genuine leather and comfort.  I can honestly say these simple, nude, asymmetric sandals from Next tick all three of those boxes. ( I feel I have to sidebar here and just note that this post is not sponsored by Next, I just truly lucked out with this order).  I tested them fully.  Barring one pair of heels, I neglected to pack a single other footwear option this trip* so these babies were stuck on me three days straight without a blister in sight.  As in, not even a mark.  And they are cheap too.  I am ordering a back up pair for next summer I love them so much.

Just one final thing before I sign off – a special thank you to Nancy who, in about six minutes flat, snapped these shots for me.  It is partly the victory of sourcing the perfect summer staples and of course partly La France, which I just adore, but undoubtedly mostly Nancy which just makes these some of my favourites shots ever.  Thank you Nancy, you get me and my style and your skills blow my mind (and I am sorry I did not edit out those white watering hoses because I know you would have but my flight landed late and sometimes I simply have to accept that I cannot do it all and most likely nobody would even notice them…  if only I had not pointed them out).

*I also neglected to pack a bra hence the bright red bikini glaring through my blouse.  But honestly, as much as I love some good lingerie at home, amidst my array of plunging and off the shoulder necklines, I did not miss one.  Except for here.  To have one here, for this post, would have been good.

This really is a perfect summer look – and it’s so fortunate both the shorts and sandals worked out!
I really love the sandals, but I’m nervous to buy them with the UK shoe sizes.
