The Sleeping Beauty ballet

Opening night of The Scottish Ballet’s ‘The Sleeping Beauty’?  Don’t mind if we do!

What a night.  Of course we couldn’t take any photos of the actual performance so I’ve given you a couple from the catalogue and included a short video at the end of the post.  A huge thank you to The Scottish Ballet for inviting us along!

The Theatre Royal may not be that much from the outside but the interior is truly stunning.  The actual ballet was beautiful; awesome dancers, wonderful costumes, some appearances from other fairytale heroines (so, a little humour) and a sleeping beauty who only slept for one short interval.  That was fine by us though because girl had some serious moves.

Highlights included every single pirouette, red riding hood’s dress in the final scene, the Lady Bluebird and her Bluebird man, the beekeeper hats which wouldn’t have fooled me and the general feeling of otherworldliness I came away with.

Just as an aside, the last ballet I went to was c/o the mother in law.  It was interesting.  There may have been a homosexual theme running through it and it may have been a little bit uncomfortable at times but it was an experience and boy were those men fit (you know, in the athletic kind of way obviously).

The Sleeping Beauty is, however, entirely suitable for children and parents alike and a perfectly festive experience!  It’s on until the end of December in Glasgow before moving throughout Scotland.  If you decide to go please be sure to educate your husband/ballet-going-partner of appropriate ballet snack etiquette – i.e. not Pringles.

And if you don’t want to take my word for it then here’s the official trailer (if you don’t see it, hit refresh)
