Bedouin nights

Thankfifi-Bedouin-Nights-4

One of the highlights of our week in Egypt was our experience on the Bedouin Feast and Stargazing trip.  Before you’ve ridden a camel you imagine it to be similar to riding a horse.  It is not.  Those guys are tall and stubborn and for once in your life you’ll wish your ass was actually bigger.  But it’s really pretty hard to beat.  If you go to Egypt please promise me you’ll ride a camel, not on the road either, but in the hot, beautiful desert.

Following the trek I discovered my bedouin trade value – 20 camels.  I will admit I was initially a little disheartened (I made a fine looking flat bread), however, subsequent volunteers were deemed worthy of 5 camels and some only chickens.  Suddenly I felt quite ‘valuable’ and with renewed energy we climbed up the rocky mountain to watch the stunning sunset and echo our shouts round the desert valleys.  This was Sayed, our guide, in his element.  I told him it was wonderful that after doing this trip likely countless times he still got so much joy from it and he told me it was because when our shouts echo he feels the strength of the group and is happy within.

After a traditional feast round the fire (with some of my delicious and perfectly formed flat bread), Sayed shared bedouin stories and culture with us while we sampled the shisha.  I’m so sad I couldn’t capture what came next on camera for you but 3 telescopes that looked like they’d be NASA approved were set up for us and Heidi (ok, she was German, not bedouin) talked us through constellations, planets and the Milky Way.  I’ve never seen a sky like it and it boggled my tiny mind in the best possible way.

Thanks to Red Sea Holidays for kindly hosting us on the trip and to Sayed especially for making it truly unforgettable.  And if this isn’t enough of a photo overload for you there are even more in my Facebook album…

no sadly I did not but we make a similar one at home of plain flour mixed simply with warm water. Leave it for an hour or so in a ball then roll and dry fry in a hot pan.
