Le Taos, Tignes – New Mexico luxe in the Alps

Take a walk with me into Le Taos…

Set in the heart of Tignes Le Lac, which sits at 2100m by the way so absolutely perfect for early through to late season skiing, is this stunner of a hotel.  A mix of huge hotel suites and incredible apartments all decked out in New Mexico style – I mean the decor here is truly next level interiors inspiration.  All that natural stone and wood fused with beautiful details throughout left me craving a luxe chalet vibe in my own home and at the very least a larger luggage allowance so I could smuggle home some of those hanging pots…

Tignes le Lac is not a huge place but it has plenty of beautiful spots to visit (travel guide coming soon), is wonderfully high up in the Alps and Le Taos is bang in the middle of it, only a few steps from the bars and restaurants in the centre and right on the Lavachet piste.  And the panoramic window in the restaurant treats you to the most incredible 180 of the village and that mountain backdrop with the sun rising on one side and on the other side turning those white peaks pink at sunset.  We checked out most of the eateries in the area and I can confirm that you will not find a dinner view to beat this one.

We stayed in a 3 room superior apartment for four which was honestly a dream; all that natural wood, the hide rugs, those slab coffee tables…  the cutest little kitchenette and open plan dining/living area, two bedrooms and two bathrooms – it was perfect.  If you have ever fallen victim to the French ski accommodation trap (i.e. ‘sleeps six’ really means you’re getting one bedroom, a sofa and a bunkbed in an alcove) then you can rest assured that this is not the case here.  There is space and beautiful space at that.  And there are robes.  And slippers.  Very important in my book.

We really lucked out with the weather for our week with wall to wall sunshine so we dined out every single meal but this apartment made the most beautiful and tranquil retreat post skiing and cosying up on that sofa was bliss.  And again, that view, through giant picture windows and out over the balcony…

And if you happen to be in the mood for a little TLC, and trust me on a ski holiday one is always in the mood for a little TLC, then the spa is your hidden gem…  A pool clad in stone and concrete with windows out to the moutains, rocking loungers and driftwood, a wonderful sauna and steam room.  And if you need those aching muscles taken care of then just go right ahead and book yourself in for a massage – you will not regret it I assure you.

What I loved most about Le Taos though is the unexpected touches; apparent in the decor with all those gorgeous details but take a stroll up that spiral staircase and you will find a huge space dedicated to, well, chilling out I guess.  A pool table, giant chess, board games, magazines and fur clad chairs to recline on.  If the weather happened to be inclement, which for us it was not, this would be your retreat.

I won’t say too much about the skiing right here because I have a travel guide coming and the season is literally just finishing BUT suffice to say it was epic.  Enormous.  The snow was really, really good.  And Le Taos is right in the middle of it – truly a perfect spot.
