Lockdown Diaries – Week 3 & 4

Is it apt that week three and four should be rolled together?  Aren’t all the weeks just rolled together right now?

But honestly, at the risk of sounding like that person who embraces a slower life and starts to appreciate the little things, I really feel I am finding my lockdown groove now after, what is it for me now, five?  Six weeks?  I checked, five and a half since that last glorious girls’ lunch with Miss Carrie (aka the last person I saw BL – Before Lockdown).  Make no mistake, slow living is a luxury to be enjoyed perhaps only by those without small people ruling the roost, but it is true that I feel settled.

It is not lost on me by any stretch that this situation is really, really hard for so many.  But for those of us who are safe and healthy, if we can find the positives I truly believe we should.  This April weather has been uncharacteristically glorious and I am currently flat on a giant beach towel atop the moss we used to call a lawn with an almost empty glass of smooth, light red, children asleep upstairs (ok, there have already been two mid nap poop situations to deal with), squinting at the laptop screen, birds singing, tapping the warm, black keys.

Last week we celebrated my birthday – the husband had the week booked off work to spend with us and it was such a treat.  My birthday was a beautiful day spent in the garden, enjoying delicious food and opening the only present which had arrived in time – upon closer inspection it transpired the giant tube was not in fact the print my Mum had ordered for me from Provence but the stencil for my patio project.  In the absence of presents however, the husband had little choice but to grant my birthday wish of toilet training Hunter for me.  There could have been no better gift I assure you.  Consequently he spent forty percent of his week in the downstairs bathroom, grateful we upgraded it pre lockdown, perched atop a toddler footstool waiting for the ‘goods’ to be delivered.  I, meanwhile, read a great book.

So yeah, work is a little slower, the only free moments of the day fall between 8.30 and 10.30pm but the husband is home and we are all here as a family, walking together, eating together, making a grotesque number of sandpies (best buy of the week), getting occasionally cross with one another, laughing together and my skin gradually becoming more like a burnished nut than a Scottish April should naturally allow.

Hope you are managing to find your own way with these new routines and that you are safe and well and as happy as you can be.x
