Did I ever see myself as a power suit girl? (Can I actually still legitimately refer to myself as a girl? A question for another day…). No, I did not. But then a curious thing happened; as I walked around M&S with armfuls of options, for an Instagram project I was working on at the time, this checked two piece caught my eye and snuck into the fitting room with me. It was a bit of a wildcard to be honest – I imagine myself a bit more bohemian these days rather than a power suit wearer. Then I tried it on.
I looked in the mirror and stood a little taller, I think I might even have done that thing only suit wearers do, you know, smooth your hands down the front and over the buttons to make sure the lines are just so? I felt like I could take on the world in this two piece. Perhaps every single other ‘girl’ who tried it felt exactly the same because it sold out in a nanosecond. (I have linked some similarly nice options at the end if you scroll down).
I wore it to an important meeting, styled like this, later that week and I felt like a BOSS. I was embarking on something way out of my comfort zone and getting a project underway to create a term of coursework for school kids in North Lanarkshire focussing on digital creativity. I will not lie and tell you I was not a little nervous about the new challenge but I was also excited for that initial meeting – to be round a table hashing out ideas and strategies again. I wore the suit. And I felt exactly like when Eric eats a banana (you have to be a certain age, i.e. not really a girl anymore) – empowered. The meeting went well. My head is swimming with ideas and questions and I thoughts.
And this week I will absolutely be sitting in my gym gear at my desk drinking copious cups of tea and trying to get them all down in some form of cohesive lesson structure. Wish me luck.
