5 key pieces to last a decade

This year I have been thinking a lot about my wardrobe and making really considered purchases.  If I buy something I want it to be around for the long haul whether that be in my own closet or in someone else’s.  I set my sights on those pieces which will last year on year and transcend the trends – the classics (in terms of style as well as quality).

Most of these are not new to me but rather the repeat offenders I reach for again and again and style in a multitude of ways.  I compiled two edits to include these key pieces – ‘the dream team’ and ‘the budget friendly’ (it may be kinder on the bank balance but still features genuine leather, high quality pieces).

Truth be told I held off sharing this feature for quite some time as I would not necessarily naturally style these pieces in this way but, of course, I was keen to show them together.  You have likely seen most of them here (or on Instagram) already if you are looking for further styling ideas.

Anyway, here they are – five key pieces that will last a decade…

THE DREAM TEAM

beauchamp oxford shirt – Beaufort & Blake
leather belt – Sezane
these Commando leggings
lana nano bag – Strathberry
dalby leather jacket – All Saints

THE BUDGET FRIENDLY

white shirt – Mango
leather wrap belt – Mint Velvet
faux leather leggings – Mint Velvet
leather bag – M&S
leather jacket – Mango

THE LEATHER JACKET
To say a leather jacket will last a decade is probably an understatement.  One of those unique pieces which, much like George Clooney, actually gets better with age.  Buying preloved is an excellent idea here (just go for real leather) and choose a style that works for you rather than what might be on trend.  Slightly cropped styles work best for me because they pair so well with dresses, allowing space for a waist belt without looking clunky but bikers and blazers are also excellent choices if that feels more ‘you’.  This one from All Saints made it into the dream team for the shorter cut and the rarely found gold hardware – total winner.

THE WHITE SHIRT
The gaping hole in my classic wardrobe.  How did I not own a white shirt?  I chose a classic from Beaufort & Blake (in these photos) and love the slightly weightier weave of the fabric.  Layer them under knits, over swimwear, pair them with jeans or knot them with a maxi skirt – literally endless possibilities – what a team player.

THE TAN WAIST BELT
I mean, honestly, if you know me at all by now you will understand why this had to be on the list.  Tan is the accessory colour for me but it might be black for you – either work year round and pair effortlessly with pretty much any look.  I included a great knot version in the budget friendly section – a fraction of the price of her designer big sister but just as beautiful and versatile.

THE LEATHER LEGS
Are you fed up of hearing about these Commando leggings yet?  One hundred percent worth the hype – the most comfortable, flattering, high quality faux leather.  I wore the tan so much it made sense for me to invest in the black and, truly, I wear them most days for the nursery drop off.  When the temperature gets a little friendlier however, these high street ones are my go to, much thinner but they stay put at the waist without cutting in and do not wrinkle at the knees which, for £29, ain’t bad.

THE PERFECT BAG
Disclaimer : your perfect bag might be entirely different from my perfect bag.  To me, though, this Strathberry baby is ‘the one’.  She has been by my side for two years now (remember when she first arrived) and my love for her does not wane.  Cross body (aka hands free) is a super practical option and the wide strap adds not only style but comfort too.  I love that, for a designer bag of premium craftsmanship, the price is not crazy high and honestly, she goes with EVERYTHING.  I found a great high street alternative for £50 too and, whilst it may not be quite as chic as the Strathberry, it is a bag that will be with you for a decade easily.

Now if I could just find these boots in black leather I could add them to the list too.  I absolutely adore them but tan suede is not a forever piece no matter what way you spin it…

As always, please feel so welcome to ask any sizing questions in the comments at the end or drop me a message on Instagram.
