The Crane, Barbados

Thankfifi - Private pool, the Crane resort, Barbados

More Barbados memories… this time from our final two days spent at The Crane.  When you search for Barbados hotels, it’s this place that keeps popping up.  With a wide, white beach edged with pink sands and the deepest, clear surf, arguably the most beautiful on the island, it’s easy to see why.

We checked in under darkness and woke up stepping out onto our deck to discover a private infinity pool.  Bliss.  Incredible as that was, the lure of the beach was so strong… the colours and the superstar waves that knock you off your feet.  The husband lost sunglasses and I lost dignity to that surf – wave in the back swiftly followed by full on face plant.  Pretty glamorous.

The pools are stunning and plentiful as well as the restaurants (we tried Zen on our last night and the food was incredible).  For me, simple is sometimes best and the beach bar and grill, right there on that white sand, under a canopy of palms, was that place.  Pina colada, mahi mahi* burger and a big smile from me – not expensive or fancy but that burger was the best fish we tried on the island, truly.

Those waves and that beach though are what made this place so incredible; a complete contrast to the calm, lapping turquoise of the west coast, the south feels wild.  It’s rugged and beautiful and you can enjoy fresh coconut cocktails on the beach, basically the Instagram holy grail.  Take me back…

*Intrigued by this delicious mahi mahi fish, we enquired on our boat trip the next day, ‘So, what really is mahi mahi fish?’… Can you even imagine my face when the answer was ‘Dolphin’?  Quickly followed by, ‘Don’t worry, not like flipper, it’s an ugly dolphin’.  Well, fuelled by cocktails the husband and I set about making our Barbados retirement plans.  We would live in a beach shack and create the Ugly Dolphin Foundation.  Tourists would come to swim with the ugly dolphins and have their photo with the ugly dolphins and we would teach those ugly dolphins tricks and they would be our ugly dolphin babies….  Then we got back to dry land and Google
