I am certainly aware of just how dramatic this makes me seem but… one of the best nights of my life. For starters lets just touch on the fact that this is a major fashion event happening in Scotland (and not the kind that only celebrities from the other side of the world are flown in for – the kind that the likes of you and me could attend). Let’s talk about the venue which was Mansfield Traquair and truly an exquisite setting for a runway. Let’s applaud the music which was composed and executed beautifully by Marty Hailey; an incredible mix of haunting and uplifting both at once.
And then there was Clements Ribeiro… an overload for the visual senses with clashing flower prints on knitted back sweatshirts, kilt buckle details, mirrored patchwork quilt prints, beaded detailing that had our breath escape like we were at a fireworks show (it was so unexpected but worked into the collection so seamlessly), tartan of course clashed with brights and, above all, a hugely diverse collection which gave us everything we could have hoped for from the incredible design duo. And you know what else? You could wear it. Like really actually wear it and it would just be amazing.
After the show I spent time in the gardens talking fashion and other things and generally feeling that my mind was blown. I was lucky enough to have a great chat with Inacio who was truly inspiring as we spoke about the future of fashion and shows and technology and doing your own thing and not being a slave to antiquated structures. Suddenly I became even more acutely aware of how special seeing this show had been. He introduced me to his wife and design partner Suzanne as his ‘Instagram friend’ (follow them here) which made me grin from ear to ear. And then we all had a chat which was somewhat surreal but, of course, awesome.
In review, an unbelievable show which gave us something that could never be achieved sandwiched in between countless shows and the whole crazy circus of a fashion week. Something so special and just on our doorstep. Thank you Clements Ribeiro and thank you EIFF.
The Edinburgh International Fashion Festival concludes its show schedule this weekend with the Future Fashion show which I am pretty excited about (tickets here) and the Gianni Scumaci closing party (tickets here).
